Choosing a photo is the beginning of a custom keepsake. Before that image becomes a crystal engraving or a 3D relief, a few decisions can change how the finished piece looks. Most involve things you know better than anyone making it: who belongs in the picture, which details matter, and what you want the gift to say.
Choose who to include and how to frame them
A favorite photograph might show a couple surrounded by wedding guests, or a pet sitting beside someone whose hand is partly visible. Make it clear whether you want everyone shown or only the main subject. If you hope to combine people from separate photographs, ask whether that is possible before ordering.
Next, consider the framing. A close portrait gives more space to facial features. A wider crop can include a familiar pose or the way someone is holding their pet. Look carefully at the edges of the image. If an ear or part of a shoulder is missing, the photograph provides no reference for that detail. You may prefer to choose another image or discuss how the crop will be handled.
Decide between crystal and relief
In a colorless laser-engraved crystal, the original photograph’s colors will not appear as they do on a screen. The image is represented through engraved points inside the transparent material.
A relief creates raised details on the surface, where light and shadow help reveal its shape. Color options depend on the specific relief and how it is made, so check the product description if preserving color matters to you.
Tell the maker about any feature you particularly want to keep. Perhaps your dog has one ear that folds over, or a person in the photo wears a distinctive pair of glasses. Pointing out that detail gives the maker something specific to consider. Very small features may still need simplifying at the finished size.
Check names, dates, and your message
Any added wording needs your attention, too. Check names and dates, then read the message as it will appear on the piece.
A long dedication may need shortening to fit the available space. For a gift, consider whether the recipient would prefer a personal nickname or their full name.
Ask about a design preview
Before ordering, find out whether a preview is available and when changes can be requested. If you receive one, check the framing and wording carefully.
It can help you assess the design, although a screen cannot fully show how light will pass through crystal or fall across a raised relief.
Consider where the finished piece will sit
Our personalized crystals and custom reliefs give you different ways to display a favorite photograph. Think about where the piece will sit as well as what goes into it.
A crowded shelf and an open bedside table may call for different sizes, even when the photograph is the same.
