The decorations come out of their box and an old ornament turns up with them. You remember who chose it, which house you lived in, or the year a child insisted it belonged at the front of the tree. Getting ready for Christmas can be a way of looking back before the next celebration begins.

Your plans may be busy or quiet, shared with a large family or with one other person. Leave room for the parts of the holiday you actually enjoy.

Bring out the things with a story

You can mix an older decoration with something new. A handmade ornament, a card you kept, or a recipe in someone's handwriting may carry a memory without matching the rest of the room.

Ask where a familiar object came from. If the answer is worth keeping, write it down with the year. Next time someone opens the box, the story can be there too.

Choose a ritual that fits this year

Make breakfast together, take a walk to see the lights, watch a film, or put on music while you cook. You do not need to repeat every tradition if your time, budget, or household has changed.

For someone beginning a new tradition, a first Christmas together may start with a photograph and a letter. What you enjoy repeating will become clearer as the years go by.

Give everyone a place in the day

Let a child help choose a decoration or invite a relative to bring a favorite dish. Ask the person who usually does all the preparation which part they would like help with.

For family members who live far away, arrange a call at a time that works in both places. You might share a recipe, open a card together, or exchange pictures of the room where you are celebrating.

Take one photograph with the usual photographer in it

Ask someone else to hold the camera or use a timer. Take a few pictures before people leave the table. The photograph can include the meal, the mismatched chairs, and the people who made the day yours.

Save the date and the names with the image. Send a copy to the people in it rather than letting it remain on one phone.

Leave some time for being together

A present can be part of Christmas without filling the whole day. A walk, a conversation, or looking through an old album can be something you remember too.

If you are choosing presents, our family Christmas gift guide begins with the people you want to include. Keep the celebration around the things they enjoy, and leave a little room for whatever happens without a plan.
